What to Expect from Your First Scaling & Polishing
Scaling and polishing is one of the most common dental procedures — but if you've never had one, it can feel intimidating. Here's exactly what happens.
Scaling and polishing — also called a dental cleaning — removes tartar and plaque that regular brushing and flossing can't shift. It's a routine procedure, typically done during a check-up, and takes around 30 to 45 minutes.
The scaling step
Your dentist or hygienist uses an ultrasonic scaler — a small vibrating tip with a water spray — to break up tartar deposits above and just below the gumline. You'll feel vibration and coolness from the water. Some areas, particularly around the gumline, may feel sensitive if you have gum inflammation.
The polishing step
After scaling, your teeth are polished with a rotating rubber cup and a mildly abrasive paste. This removes surface stains and leaves teeth feeling smooth and clean. The paste has a gritty texture and comes in different flavours.
Does it hurt?
For most patients, scaling and polishing is uncomfortable but not painful. If you have sensitive teeth or significant tartar buildup, you may feel more sensitivity — let your dentist know and they can adjust the pressure or offer a numbing gel for the gumline. After the appointment, mild sensitivity for a day or two is normal.
